How to Reach Leh Ladakh by Road

How to Reach Leh Ladakh by Road

Leh Ladakh is connected by daily flights from Delhi to Leh. Leh is also connected by air from Jammu, Chandigarh and Srinagar. Number of flights operate daily to Leh Ladakh.

However if you wish to experience the enjoyment, fun and thrill at Leh then visiting Leh by Road is advisable. Leh is cut off from the rest of country during winters and it is only during the summers that you can plan a trip to Leh by Road.

There are two routes to Leh. One route to Leh Ladakh is via Manali Rohtang and the second road route to Leh is from Srinagar via Kargil.

If you wish to go to Leh Ladakh from Delhi by road then you can take the Manali route to reach Leh Ladakh,

Distance of Manali to Leh is around 550 Kms. Distance of Leh from Manali is around 400 Kms. From Manali take Rohtang Pass route to reach Kelong in Himachal. You need to take a halt at Kelang as the journey ahead at the night time is not permissible and also not advisable. Kelong is the midway while on the way to Leh Ladakh. There are many Hotels and Logdes at Kelong for stay.

The next day you can take the Kelong Leh route to reach Leh Ladakh. Make sure that the vehicle you are traveling is 4x4 drive while driving through Manali Leh highway.

The Manali Leh Highway is thrown open to the public from mid May till October-November depending on the snow fall.

The other route to reach Leh is from Srinagar. From Srinagar make sure that the highway is open and the timings for the outgoing vehicles. From Srinagar to Leh the journey again is quite interesting and enjoyable on the terrains. You need to take a halt at Kargil,midway from Srinagar to Leh.

This is an old traditional wresling championship where people from nearby villages take part. Dogra Festival is also organized in the summers in Mansar lake.

From Jammu frequent bus service is available to Mansar. Shared taxis to Mansar are also available. J&K tourism accommodation is available in Mansar.

Places to Visit Near Srinagar - Wular Lake

Wular Lake Kashmir
Wular Lake in Jammu & Kashmir is the largest fresh water lake in India. Wular Lake in Kashmir is located about 50 Kms from the Capital City Srinagar. Wular Lake in Kashmir is spread over around two hunderd square Kilometers. The unique highlighting point of Wular Lake is that the Jhelum river flows into Wular and then flows out.

The landscape in and around the Wular lake is amazing and breathtaking. The scenic beauty alongside the Wular lake is truly mesmerising.

While in Kashmir do not miss to visit Wular Lake. You can hire a boat or Doongas or House Boats in Wular Lake. Erin Valley along side Wular Lake in Kashmir is must see. How to Reach Wular Lake in Srinagar Kashmir
Srinagar is the nearest Airport and connected by daily flights from Delhi, Jammu and other major cities.

Share Taxis from Jammu to Srinagar will charge around Rs 500 per person. Jammu to Srinagar buses are also available.

You can also go by train from Qazigund to Baramulla or Qazigund to Srinagar.

From Srinagar you can book your seat in a Jamm & Kashmir Tourism Bus which runs from Srinagar to Wular Lake for a day trip. Shared taxis from Srinagar to Wular Lake are also available apart from Mini buses from Srinagar which runs on this route.

Trains to Srinagar - Kashmir Railway Schedule and Route Map

Trains in Kashmir Valley

Kashmir Railway is one of the most successful Railway projects undertaken by Government of India. Kashmir will be connected by rail from Jammu in a couple of years from now. Earlier the trains used to run till Jammu but now that line has been extended till Udhampur. Jammu to Udhampur line is functional since 2005 and Udhampur is connected from all parts of the country by Rail now. trains run from Udhamupr to Delhi and other cities.

The other phase from Udhampur to Qazigund is under construction however Udhampur to Katra trains will start running soon as the track is almost complete now.

The train service in the Kashmir valley is already available with the trains running between Qazigund and Baramula. Once the work for Katra to Qazigund line is complete the entire Kashmir valley will be connected by rail from Jammu.

Trains runs between Qazingund and Baramulla in the valley and covers over 120 Kms. The Qazigund Baramulla train covers Anant Nag and Srinagar as well. If you wish to experience the exciting train journey in the Kashmir Valley in High Tech trains you can take train from Qazigund to Srinagar.
